One can hardly watch television for more than a few minutes without seeing a commercial for the iPhone, and hearing the announcer say something like, “Do you want to look up restaurant reviews – there’s an app for that, and do you want train schedules – there’s an app for that too.”
Well, a new iPhone “app” has been released that will no doubt be of grave concern to anyone registering as a sex offender pursuant to California Penal Code section 290. This new “app,” called “Offender Locator,” which was developed by ThinAir Wireless, promises to allow iPhone users to track sex offenders living in their area, or anywhere they may travel.
“Offender Locator” uses the iPhone’s built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) to pinpoint the user’s precise location, and then provide a map listing sex offenders in the local area. Tapping on one of the “pins” on the map brings up a photograph of the offender, as well as their address, date of birth and list of convictions. Users can also search for sex offenders living nearby a friend or colleague whose address is stored in their Apple iPhone address book, or they can type in a street address to generate a list of convicted sex offenders in the area.
