The Sex Offender Registration Act, governed by California Penal Code section 290, lists each of the crimes that require you to register as a sex offender in the state of California. Crimes that require you to register under Penal Code 290 if convicted include:

–          Rape, or aiding and abetting rape – PC 261, 264.1

–          Aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 – PC 269

–          Incest – PC 285

–          Sodomy – PC 286

–          Lewd or Lascivious acts with a  minor – PC 288

–          Oral copulation – PC 288a

–          Sexual battery – PC 243.4

–          Pimping or pandering a minor – PC 266

–          Violating child pornography laws – PC 311

–          Sexual penetration by force or fear – PC 289

–          Indecent exposure – PC 314

–          Arranging a meeting with a minor for lewd purposes, or contacting a minor with the intent to commit certain felonies – PC 288.4, 288.3

–          Annoying or molesting a child – PC 647.6

–          Showing obscene material to minors – PC 288.2

 

If you are required to register as a sex offender under Penal Code section 290, you will be required to annually register with local law enforcement agencies and provide them with information of your whereabouts. Additionally, your name, address and the crime you were convicted of will be posted online and be available to the public pursuant to Penal Code section 290.46, also known as Megan’s Law.
