There is a new bill in Sacramento that if passed would no longer require a person to register as a sex offender for life on certain sex crimes. Assembly Bill 625 is being brought by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco and supported by the Sex Crime Management Board.

What this means to you

Finally, the tide is shifting and California is waking up to better understand that life registration is simply unnecessary in many cases. There will be a classification of low, medium and high risk offenders with only the high risk offenders subjected to the life registration requirement. Certain sex crimes would require a 20 year period to register while others would only require a 10 year registration requirement. Now the state legislature is realizing that a one time offender of indecent exposure for example, should not be treated the same as a serial rapist.
